Rasmussen has won Denmark’s national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest, Melodi Grand Prix, which means that he will represent his country in Lisbon, Portugal in May. Rasmussen won with the Viking-inspired anthem ‘Higher Ground’.

Rasmussen was crowned the winner after two rounds of voting, using a combination of public and jury votes. The singer won the final, which consisted of three songs, with 50 % of the votes.

“I’m completely overwhelmed. It’s crazy… insane…,” a shocked Rasmussen told dr.dk after his victory.

Ten acts participated in the show which was hosted by Annette Heick and Johannes Nymark for the second year in a row. Johannes Nymark also represented Denmark at Eurovision in 2016 as a part of Lighthouse X with the song ‘Soldiers of Love’.

The winner of Eurovision 2014, Conchita, also made a special appearance during the show to sing her powerful winner’s song ‘Rise Like A Phoenix’.
