In tonight’s NCIS Hawai’i episode, Jesse has been filling in for Tennant. Tennant hasn’t passed all her interviews she needs to do to regain her old position. She was normally NCIS Special Agent in Charge of the NCIS Hawai’i Field Office, but lately she’s been doing to a lot of therapy as well as field tests to mark her as fit.

Jesse would have liked to have said he didn’t mind filling in and he couldn’t bring himself to say that because that’s a darn lie. Jesse hates being in charge. He might take a sick day or if he has to do another case without Tennant. He constantly asks where’s Tennant? And his promise to himself that she’ll come back eventually is moving further and further away.

Tennant needed to actually do therapy. She can’t just show up and smile. She has to talk about the death of a friend, Charlie-1. She has to talk about the betrayal of her mentor.

The same mentor that is currently a fugitive on the run. There was a lot that happened when Tennant was kidnapped and tortured. She has to discuss all of that before she can earn a clean bill of health. Therefore, Tennant tried to do the easiest things for her. She could bullcrap her way out of therapy or fitness exams. The true and finally test was her interview with Special Agent Sam Hana.

The two worked a case together in the past.

Tennant knew she could trust Sam. He could empathize with her because he too suffered on the job. He lost his wife Michelle and he thought that would get Tennant to talk, but she wasn’t there yet.

She doesn’t want to talk. She wants to do something. Anything. It was how she healed and so got Sam on board. Sam cleared her to work. Tennant returned right as NCIS was gathering evidence. They had a man in witness protection die. He was in fact killed by a two hit gunmen. And this all happened in broad daylight.

The gunmen wore fake police uniforms. NCIS contacted the US Marshalls to find out about the victim. They were stonewalled with the Marshalls only not with FBI. Kate used her FBI credentials to figure out why the victim was in WitSec.

The victim’s name was Josh Brenner. He worked at the Department of Defense as an administrator where he uncovered corruption. He helped take down some very powerful people. He was supposed to start a new life in Hawaii with a new name. And it seems his information got leaked to the bad guys.

Tennant had to go over to the US Marshall’s office. She spoke to the Agent in charge. She knew they were interrogating someone they believed leaked Josh’s new identity.

They wanted to handle the situation in house. They refused to work with NCIS. Only NCIS were still working the case. They caught it and they were going to work it in spite of the Marshalls. Nobody cared if those people got angry about it. NCIS were focusing on getting justice for Josh. They looked into anyone renting police uniforms. They ran a diagnostic on what the weapon could be.

Ernie also had to explore the dark web. He wanted to know how Josh’s information got out there. But it revealed an even bigger problem. The US Marshalls weren’t just suffering a leak.

They were suffering from a flood. Their entire WitSec program has been released onto the dark web. Now anyone with access could look up these people and potentially harm them. NCIS wanted to stop that from happening. They tried to cut off the source before the rest of the information gets out there. They knew they had to work with the US Marshalls to find the leaker.

They ruled out the suspect that the US Marshalls had in their custody. They said their thief had used as many as seventy-five computers to do the hacking. The US Marshall wanted to close access.

Tennant and Sam convinced them to keep it open. If they close it, they lose whatever chance they had to capture the hacker. They’ll just pick up and leave. Leaving the connection open however will guarantee that the hacker will be vulnerable to being hacked. Ernie did his magic. He got an address that was in Las Vegas.

Sam and Tennant hopped on the next flight there. They got lost because they were using a map from Morocco, but they soon found what they were looking for. They stopped the hackers.

The hackers had ties to the Russian mob. The mob must have funded the hacking farm to bring down one person. The farm was working at the behest of one person. The person in charge wasn’t caught. Tennant at least figured out what the leak was about. The leak was about a prisoner transfer. Those are usually done by the US Marshalls.

The real hacker came to Hawaii. They brought down a prisoner plane. They wanted to get to someone on board and Tennant wanted to stop them.

And so tonight ended on a cliffhanger because the last thing they showed was plane going down.

THE END!
