June 2024 · 3 minute read

Yesterday, Australia announced their Eurovision 2018 representative. Jessica Mauboy will be returning to the Eurovision stage to finish off what she started. She’ll be following in the footsteps of incredible Australian artists, Guy Sebastian, Dami Im, and Isaiah. The announcement was made by SBS, with a video released on the official Eurovision YouTube Channel.

It’s not the first time this incredible female artist has graced the Eurovision stage. In a memorable performance back in 2014, Jessica Mauboy represented all things Australian during a Semi-Final performance in Copenhagen. She sang her song “Sea Of Flags” and it came with a video which saw the country of Australia get lifted into the air and placed on the North Sea.

So, who is Jessica Mauboy? She’s one of the biggest female artists in Australia at the moment, with a bunch of hits to her name. She came on to the scene in 2006 when she competed in the fourth season of Australian Idol. She subsequently came second and went on to sign a contract with Sony Music Australia.

Since then she’s had 16 top-twenty Australian chart singles and six of her albums have hit the top-ten, with her debut “Been Waiting” just missing out by charting at number 11. Her biggest hit to date is “Burn” which hit number one in Australia. She has collaborated with the likes of Flo Rida, Pitbull, Snoop Dogg, Ludacris, and Jay Sean; she also toured with Beyoncé and Chris Brown. Australia definitely brings big names to this competition, and it really does pay off.

She has also dipped into acting, where she starred in films Bran Nue Dae and The Sapphires. Presently, she can be seen playing the lead character, Billie Carter, in Australian television drama series The Secret Daughter.

Her song has yet to be revealed, we’re expecting it to drop next year. Australia has been doing well in the Eurovision Song Contest ever since they debuted in 2015. That year, they were invited as a guest, so went straight into the Grand Final. Guy Sebastian sang “Tonight Again” and came fifth with 196 points (he recently released his eighth studio album titled “Conscious“).

Then Dami Im represented Australia in 2016 with her awesome song “Sound Of Silence”. Due to the new points system, she gained 511 points, coming second – controversy ensued but the EBU stuck by their points system. Next was Isaiah in 2017, who came ninth with 173 points. Could Jessica Mauboy be crowned the next winner? Or could she, at least, keep Australia’s top-ten streak? Time will tell.

As the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 draws near, we have just five months to go – that’s less than a year! Countries have been announcing their participants. So far, we have Laura Groeseneken for BelgiumSaara Aalto for FinlandWaylon for the NetherlandsAISEL for Azerbaijan, and Cesar Sampson for Austria. Jessica Mauboy sure has some tough competitors. We expect the other countries to make their announcements in the coming months.

The Eurovision Song Contest 2018 will take place at the Altice Arena, Lisbon, Portugal after Salvador Sobral won the 2017 contest with his song “Amar Pelod Dois”. The two Semi-Finals will take place on 8 May and 10 May, whilst the Grand Final will take place on 12 May 2018.
