Audra Mclaughlin Reminisces on a Former Flame in "Sad song and a Cowboy"

June 2024 · 2 minute read

Audra Mclaughlin is a Nashville-based country artist who has graced the stage as a finalist on The Voice and performer for the NFL. Her new song “Sad song and a Cowboy” takes a look at a fleeting romance in retrospect and highlights the mistakes we make with rose-tinted lenses.

“Sad song and a Cowboy” features windswept acoustic strings, restless percussion that rolls like a tumbleweed, and a soulful vocal that brushes over the scars of heartbreak. The music video captures intimate memories of a cowboy wandering through a thrift shop, watching horses run through a field, and gingerly smiling at the camera as if we’re reliving Mclaughlin’s experience. Mclaughlin sings, “He’s gone like a tumbleweed in Texas wind // A John Wayne disappearing into the sun.” “Sad song and a cowboy” brings to mind the universal experience of letting someone go over breathtaking sonics that rustle down the highway.

Audra Mclaughlin is an acclaimed country artist and former finalist on The Voice as a member of Blake Shelton’s team. In 2017, she found out she had a cyst on her vocal chord and underwent vocal surgery and rehabilitation. After her recovery, she moved to Nashville where she still remains today.
